The #1 reason why solopreneurs never get traction with their online business is they aren’t focused on a specific customer.
Instead, they are wildly scattered.
I want to show you 2 different ways to “niche down” and target a specific audience with a specific problem.
A problem you can solve.
Method 1: Choosing a sub-niche by audience
A sub-niche is a smaller subsection of a broad audience. Generally, it works like this:
Broad audience → niche → sub-niche
You can apply this formula to the audience you’re looking to attract.
For example, let’s say you're a publisher looking to build an online coaching business.
The initial step while beginning a web-based business is to pick a niche or specialty .
Rather than targeting all entrepreneurs (broad audience), or solopreneurs (niche), you could focus specifically on Linkedin solopreneurs (sub-niche).
This example assumes you have deep knowledge of Linkedin solopreneurs and can speak intelligently about the topic.

🎨Method 2 Identifying what Problem is this niche aching to solve?
If you were to meet this person today , what exactly will she be complaining about and be ready to pay you to erase that headache?
In 1943, Abraham Maslow proposed what we know today as Maslow's Order of Necessities. Each person on the planet has basic human needs that fall into five classifications:
Physiological: Food, water, breathing, sleeping
Problem:I am unable to sleep because of pressure
Safety: Employment, a home to live in, security for the family, social stability
Problem :I want to earn a sideline income that can grow to fulltime income
Love/Belonging: Family, friendship, intimacy, a sense of connection with others
Problem: I want to have a sense of belonging with my community
Esteem: Achievement, respect from others, confidence
Problem: I want to be confident with my writing and presentation to my audience
Self-Actualization: Creativity, spontaneity, morality, acceptance
Problem: I want to be more creative in attracting my audience

1. Skills

Start with your innate skills .
What talent are you gifted with ? Each person is endowed with at least one skill that he or she is good at.
List down in a piece of paper - on the left side what you are good at and on the right side what you struggle with. Remember that what you are good at is something that other people are looking for.
2. Interest
Humans are innately curious.
Curiosity leads to asking questions of why and how and makes us think of better solutions.
Are you interested with the arts, history, travel, sports or science
Hold onto your interest as this will keep you going when you question if it's worth it.
3.Problem

Skill + Interest should solve a problem for it to be monetized.
You need to build something that would solve other people's problem. Remember your niche and identify their pain points.
In a niche of one, you create one idea, and then learn how to say it, do it, or package it 1,000+ different ways.
4.Solution -Product/Service
Productizing is Monetizing
In a digital world your solution can be offered through
Courses
Online videos
Online Podcasts
Blogs
5.Distribution and Audience
You need to be found where your audience or community is.
In order for people to discover your unique and interesting idea, they have to be able to find it. This is where distribution comes into play.
Your audience is an outcome of good distribution.
Having a niche of one gives you an advantage because you’ve increased the number of places you can distribute.
For example, if you’re a solopreneur tech website publisher, you can distribute on sites centered around solopreneurs, technology , AI trends, etc.
I’d recommend focusing on the following:
- Personal blog or newsletter:a place where your content can live forever and can be a catch-all for email subscribers.
- Social media:pick one channel and master it. Don’t try to be a social media hero from the start.
- Industry sites: every skill and interest has industry sites. For example, I like to talk about building online, so I can find great channels on Linkedin
- Slack Channels: join private Slack communities centered around your skills or interests.
By distributing routinely, a natural audience will grow.
Remember, you don’t pick your audience, they pick you. You simply set up a system where more people are likely to find you.
